Plug-In Solar ROI Tool
Updated: April 2026
Region: UK Average
Following the April 15, 2026 amendment to BS 7671 (Amendment 4), the UK has officially adopted the "Plug-and-Play" standard used across Europe.
The Law has changed in three major ways:
- Higher Limit: The legal AC output for "Micro-generation" has increased from 600W to 800W.
- No More Red Tape: Standardized "Type Tested" kits no longer require prior DNO permission for domestic use.
- Consumer Rights: Solar has transitioned from a permanent "electrical installation" to a portable "household appliance."
Whether you are a homeowner or a renter, you can now legally generate your own power from a balcony, terrace, or garden shed. Use our tool below to see the real-world ROI of these new 800W systems at current 2026 energy prices.
Behind the Data: How We Calculate ROI
As plug-in solar moves into the mainstream, accurate data is vital to avoid "greenwashing" marketing. Our methodology is based on the following 2026 UK standards:
- The 800W Ceiling: While you can buy kits with 1200W or 1600W of panels, the inverter must be capped at 800W to remain compliant with UK "Plug-and-Play" laws. Our calculator accounts for this "clipping" to provide realistic output data.
- Irradiance Mapping: We use regional sunlight data (Kk values) to reflect the North-South divide. A kit in Cornwall will realistically pay for itself 18 months faster than the same kit in Aberdeen.
- April 2026 Pricing: We use the current average unit rate of 24.67p/kWh. Note that if you are on an "Export Tariff" (SEG), your savings may differ slightly, though most plug-in users focus on Self-Consumption for the highest ROI.
- The "Renters Advantage": Unlike traditional solar, these kits are non-permanent. We calculate ROI based on the hardware cost only, assuming zero professional installation fees as these are DIY-certified units.
